I only got to know Carl a little over a year ago. He refered to me as "Christman kid's giirlfriend" until he gave me the new name "hey, flower girl". He was so generous to help with the Ladies Auxiliary in getting me flower donations(hence the nickname). He was always nice to me and we joked every time we crossed paths. He was alot of fun, and I surely will miss him. For the little amount of time I knew him, he made an impression on me that will last my lifetime. I am sorry for your loss and the loss our community will certainly feel.

To the Detwiler Family;
Condolences to all of you.
Carl and I go way back to the farming days when I helped him in Perkeomion Heights doing cultipacking with the piece of junk Minniapolis Moline tractor with the swinging seat.
In the early 60"s I joined the U.M.W.D Fire company and have been in Carl's presence everytime the siren went off' be it a fire call or a fire police call he was always there, unlees he was on a tow job.
At most long fire calls when NorthPenn Goodwill was called Carl would try to get to the food truck to get his "RAW" hambergers. (Did'nt like um cooked.)
Mr. D was one of the most dedicated volunteer firemen you would ever want to meet and one hell of a guy. I know We'll miss you alot

Great Spirits are far and few.
Carl was that great spirit to me, I have had the honor to be involved with Carl on so many differnt issues from SOGs to Bylaws to home and family to Fire calls to Tow jobs we would talk about everything and anything and I enjoyed it all. He was always there for me, And i will always be there for you. Carl enjoyed us and we enjoyed Carl. Thank you Carl for spending that special day with us at the clam bake and all the times before that.
Carl also enjoyed the training and i enjoyed the personal time he gave us one on one during driver training. At monthly meeting before it start id walk into the room and we would make eye contact he would raise his hand and say HEY SMITTY out loud it bring smiles to both our faces. Carl commanded my up most respect. ill cherish all the conversations and the time we spent together. I'll help to carry on by his example at the fire house the Future ideas, wants and needs of the members and the community in which he served and gave so much of his time. Its going to be hard with out Him and i will miss you Carl But we will press on and keep your thoughts and spirit alive thats the will of future.
God bless you all

Dear Detwiler Family,
It was with great sadness that we heard about the passing of Carl. He always had time to talk with you when we brought our cars over to Ron's for service, usually trying to talk you into coming to a chicken dinner or other function at the fire company. I especially enjoyed his stories about the Hosensack area. He will be missed.

To the entire Detwiler Family,

Our sincere and most heart felt sympathies go out to all of you. Our hearts truly feel your pain and we can't tell you enough how much we will miss Carl and how much we respected him, as a member of the Fire Company, as a Friend, as a mentor, and most importantly, as a person. In the 20 plus years that I've know him, he has taught me a LOT and to him, no question was dumb.. I will miss being called "Schmeltzle kid". I will miss him deviling me about hearing us township employees on our radios, over his scanner...as well as a couple of "towing issues". I will miss him showing up at my door to personally sell me a Fire Company calendar. That was his way; face to face... honest.... the world was a better place because of Carl and people of his character.. and he certainly was one... We are better people for having known Carl and for that, we will always be thankful. God bless all of you, and Carl...

To the Dewiler Family,
My deepest condolences to you all. As I read through the online guest book, my eyes began to swell with tears. I wondered what I could possibly add to what others had already mentioned about Carl. Whether they knew him for years or months, they all knew he was an extordinary man. I've known Carl as long as I can remember, first from my parents taking their vehicles to Detwiler Automotive for service, and then following in my Father/Grandfathers footsteps by becoming a volunteer firefighter at Old Zionsville Station 19 in 1987 where Carl was chief. As others expressed, he always had a smile...or up to no good smirk...and he would tell you how he saw it, whether it was what you wanted to hear or not. I found his farm, trucking, fire department and Jamaica stories, if not informative, always entertaining. Carl always made time for me, as he did for alot of others. If I needed an answer to a question, driver training on the fire trucks (which he did very patiently as I am prone to grind gears), a flat bed dump truck or a tow (he has had at least 3 of my vehicles on his flatbed...one of which was in the middle of an incredible snowstorm. I remember asking if we'd be alright "we got the chains on" he said and up Shimmerville Hill we went) Carl was there. I don't believe he ever called me by my first name. It was always "Hey Ackerman Kid" which was alright with me, as I am proud to be my parents son. My family has recently moved back into Upper Milford Township and I was anticipating catching one of the first fire trucks out with Carl as my driver, as I had done years ago. Whenever the fire siren blows I will continue looking to the right (down Batman Rd) to see if Carl is coming around the pine trees before I turn left off Ridge Rd. I imagine I will see him often because he will not be forgotten and I believe he will be on every call with us. I will miss him. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I am very fortunate to have known Carl for the past 8 years, and deeply saddened about hearing of his loss. He was a fine example of a true American. Our community and fire department will always remember the countless hours Carl has volunteered over the years, never asking for anything in return. Even during the middle of the night on a fire call you could count on him to have a smile on his face. And that smile is what I will always remember about him. He has been a wonderful friend and fellow firefighter whom I will miss greatly. May god bless you Carl. My deepest condolences go out to Edie and the entire Detwiler family.

I am so sorry for your loss. I remember Carl from when I was younger picking up our cars that broke way too often, and I saw him way more often when I joined the Upper Milford Fire Department back in late February 2008. Carl was a great guy, always was happy, great guy to talk to and he will be deeply missed. He always used to ask me "Whats up son?" and that always brought a smile to my face and then I would converse with him. Carl rest in peace you were a great man. Prayers to the family, and you will definately be missed sincerely at Station 19 and all of Zionsville.

I am sorry for your loss. I am a junior firefighter with Upper Milford Western District and Id see Carl on a weekly basis or whenever we had calls. I can still remember myself as a kid seeing Carl when my family would bring cars over to Detwilers to have them fixed and me asking my mom why is Santa Clause fixing our car. He was a great man and I always knew if I asked him a question about the fire dept. or what to do in case of situations, he'd have the answer for me. Im going to to miss ya Carl.

Dear Edith,

You may not remember me, but you and Carl used to see me durning my February trips to Jamaica - we met on the beach there many years ago (although I haven't seen you there in the last several years). I'll always remember the two of you on the beach - Carl with his red hat and toothpick supply poking thru! He talked often of his work with the fire company and his trucking history. He always seemed to be a caring and honest man - rare qualities these days. Edith I wish you the strength to endure these difficult times and, when you're ready, I hope to see you again on the beach.
God Bless you.
